cutting cell-phone costs

ou can save money with all-in-one cellular calling plans that combine airtime, roaming charges and long-distance service into one flat rate. With rates as low as nine cents a minute, you may even find it more economical to make your cell phone your only phone.

However, these flat-rate plans won't save you money if you're just an occasional cell-phone user. For maximum benefit, you'll have to spend up to ten hours a month on your cell phone or make many wireless calls when you travel. In addition, you have to buy in bulk--typically at least 600 minutes a month, which works out to about 20 minutes a day. If you are a frequent traveler, the new low-cost rates let you avoid pricey hotel phones and calling cares. But there is a downside: You must pay for all unused minutes, and additional airtime will cost more. Most companies are now offering a one-rate coverage plan, so shop around.
